Shop floor Colleagues

The great news is that very soon everyone will be able to search and apply online for all our hourly paid shop floor roles. We’re currently trialling our new application system in six of our stores:

  • Maidstone store
  • Harlow store
  • Hatfield store
  • Bangor store (Northern Ireland)
  • Kendal store
  • Dunbar store

and we’re planning to roll this out to all of our stores later this year.

Whether you’re looking for work in any of these areas or just want to find out more about the hourly paid roles that we have in our stores or depots just click here to see our new dedicated area of this site.

If you’re looking to work in any of our other locations you can simply contact your local Job Centre Plus or ask for an application form at the Customer Service Desk in any one of our stores. You should bear in mind that we're busiest at the weekends so most jobs will involve some weekend working. We do, however, make sure that everyone has some weekend time off!

General Store Managers

The GSM is in charge of running the whole store – and with the average store typically turning over £45 million a year and having a team of up to 700 colleagues, there’s a lot to manage! We’re responsible for everything from creating a brilliant shopping experience for every customer to increasing sales and making sure all the departments work together. We’re highly experienced retailers, looking for the next step in our career. Read more.

Trading Team Leaders

At ASDA, Trading Team Leaders are a step away from the General Store Manager (GSM). Our role is to put ASDA’s trading strategy into action. We also lead a team of department managers and colleagues and deputise for the GSM when necessary. Roles include the Ambient Team Leader who’s responsible for Warehouse and Grocery and the Fresh Team Leader who covers all fresh food departments.

Night Team Leaders

The Night Team Leader is responsible for running the store at night. This is one of the most important roles there is because we manage a team of managers throughout the night to ensure that our stores are in pristine condition, ready for another day’s trade, every morning. As many of our stores are open 24 hours, we do this whilst maintaining an exceptional shopping experience for our customers. The nature of our role means that a natural career progression is to become a General Store Manager.

People Managers

We work hand in hand with the General Store Manager and deal with every aspect of the people agenda in store. This covers everything from recruiting the warmest, friendliest colleagues to training and from disciplinary issues to salary control. We’re there to support colleagues and use our influencing skills in a wide range of areas.

Department Managers

As the title suggests, we’re responsible for a particular department in store, for example Grocery, Fruit and Veg or Dairy. As well as leading and motivating a department team it’s our role to ensure a fantastic shopping experience for our customers and drive sales by making sure stock levels are maintained and that our department always looks tidy and appealing.

Night Department Managers

We lead a team of colleagues and are responsible for making sure that each night the shelves are filled and the store is made ready for another day’s trade every morning. Most stores trade 24 hours so it’s about doing all this whilst still looking after our customers!

Home Shopping Managers

Home shopping’s a rapidly growing area for us, and it’s due to get much bigger in the future. Home Shopping Managers ensure that orders are fulfilled and delivered on time and that the customer has the same great experience they would enjoy if they were shopping in store.

Counters Managers

People love the personal touch of shopping at our counters whether they’re picking up something from the deli, a roast chicken from the rotisserie, freshly baked pizza or an Indian or Chinese takeaway. It’s the Counters Manager’s role to make sure the team behind the counter delivers great service and drives sales.

General Merchandise Managers

General Merchandise is a rapidly expanding growth area for us and covers everything from homewares to toys and DVDs to home entertainment systems. The Manager’s job is to lead and develop the department team to deliver a great shopping experience and as a result, great sales.

Service Managers

We’re committed to delivering world class service to customers and it’s the Service Manager’s role to make sure we always do. This could mean making sure that there are never more than three customers in a checkout queue so they can pay for their shopping and be on their way as quickly as possible. They’re also on hand to help with customer questions and requests whenever they are needed. This department will have over 100 colleagues to look after too!

Security Managers

The Security Manager oversees everything from ensuring the safety of our colleagues to making sure that losses through theft are kept to a minimum. They are assisted by a small team in each store – and an extensive CCTV network.

Bakery Managers

Our in store bakery is one of the key departments in all our stores as it’s so popular with our customers who even listen out for the bell we ring every hour, on the hour, to let them know that the latest batch is fresh out of the oven. The Bakery Manager is in charge of a team of up to 20 people making sure that we produce just enough to satisfy demand, but not so much that we’ve products left over.

Warehouse Managers

Warehouse Manager might be a backroom role, but what could be more important than making sure that we have the stocks we need to keep our shelves well filled for our customers. We oversee up to 16 deliveries every day at our busiest times of the year! We work very closely with managers across the whole store to ensure everyone is kept fully aware of the availability of stock.

George Managers

George is a very important part of ASDA, and it’s a department we’re very proud to have in all of our stores.

As the George Manager, we're responsible for running the George clothing department, providing a great customer experience and managing a team of up to 20 colleagues. With stock changing from week to week and new fashions always being introduced, we’ve a very busy department!
