I’m Richard and I'm the Operations Manager for the Barnsley ASDA Living store.

I’ve worked at ASDA for 22 years now, I started as a colleague on the shop-floor and I've progressed through a variety of roles including Department Manager, Availability Manager working on improving our processes to ensure we’ve products in store for our customers, and even as a Night Manager.

Through my Personal Development Plan which I regularly review with my manager it’s my goal to be part of a management team which opens a new ASDA Living store with all the extra responsibilities this brings, and eventually to be a General Store Manager.

There’s a great deal to being an Operations Manager, especially at a busy store like the one we have in Barnsley and any day can have lots of variety in it. For example one of my responsibilities is HR or 'People' practices as we like to call them at ASDA. So I could be training colleagues, implementing new initiatives that have been briefed from our support functions at ASDA House or recruiting warm and friendly colleagues to grow our team. I often deputise for our Store Manager, which gives me the opportunity to take on wider responsibilities, which I really enjoy and enables me to work on my development opportunities.

Above all, there's a real team spirit here which means when we’re extra busy, everyone pitches in to help - many’s the time when I’ve replenished shelves on a hectic Saturday afternoon!

I have to say although I’ve been here for 22 years, I can still come to work with all the enthusiasm and excitement of when I first started my retail career with ASDA all those years ago. The culture, rewards and prospects are all so good I just don’t think I’d find them anywhere else!
