Mark
Night Manager
Store

I’m Mark and I’m the Night Trading Manager at our Ashton-under-Lyne store. Basically, my role involves managing the team which works through the night to replenish the shelves, take deliveries into our warehouse and generally get the store looking pristine for the next day’s trading. This is made a little more complicated because we’re a 24-hour store, so we achieve all this while continuing to deliver an outstanding experience for our customers.

Although I’m the Manager, I also pitch in myself with everything from filling shelves to helping to unload wagons. There’s such a great team spirit amongst us, so it’s always a pleasure to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in.

My working day starts at 9pm and runs through to 8am the next morning and I work four out of seven nights each week. Before joining ASDA I’d done a lot of bar work so I was used to working at night and it wasn’t such an adjustment for me.

The first thing I do is take a tour of the store with the Duty Manager and get a view on the day’s trading. Then the store’s handed over to me and I’m in charge until the morning. This is why lots of Night Trading Managers go on to become General Store Managers. It’s quite a natural progression.

I work four nights out of seven, so ironically, I get to spend more time with my family than most of my daytime colleagues and there are lots of other advantages to working nights too – no traffic on the way to work, the chance to go to the gym in the day when it’s quiet, and this season I’ve also managed to watch virtually all my team’s Saturday games.

Better still, I get an extra £5,000 allowance for being a Night Trading Manager but the role’s real reward, I always think, is being able to walk around the store just before I go home in the morning. Looking at the fully stocked shelves and the clear aisles ready for another day’s successful trading there’s a real sense of pride from a job well done.
