Hello, I’m Keith and I’m the George Living Manager at Altrincham Store.
Once I left education I went straight in to fashion retail. I started as a trainee manager and worked my way up to a store manager role, holding a number of positions with various retailers.
When I read in a trading magazine in 2004 about how ASDA were launching ASDA Living stores which would feature George, I jumped at the chance to be involved from the start. It was a fantastic opportunity to build on my experience, to manage a larger floor space and to manage more colleagues. As ASDA Living stores were only just starting out, it was a fantastic way to raise my profile too, and I knew the range of opportunities would be extensive.
Since I've started the role I have not been disappointed and have really developed. The ASDA Living format offers a range of General Merchandise and George clothing products. Primarily I am responsible for managing the George department; I also have the opportunity to deputise for the Store Manager on occasion, which has helped me to broaden my management skills even further.
My role is to lead, coach, develop and motivate my team to deliver the store's business plan, sales, profit and bonus, ensuring first class service to customers at all times.
My average day starts with a floor walk, looking at all the departments, looking at this from a visual merchandising point of view, looking at stock and then planning any moves required and getting prepared for new deliveries. I will also lead our team meeting, or huddles as we call them at ASDA each shift with the George colleagues to talk through business performance and outline the day's priorities and targets. I work with work with a diverse range of colleagues and I'm passionate about developing my team to reach their potential.
It’s a hands on role so I need to be organised, results driven, and have a flare for visual merchandising too, so fashion retail really helps! As with any management role there is paperwork to do and I am accountable for controlling costs and maximising sales to hit plan for my department.
