I'm Gareth and I'm a Distribution Operations Manager based at ASDA House in Leeds.
I joined ASDA after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University. My role involves co-ordinating between our supply chain and our logistics network to make sure that we move the volume of products through the network as efficiently as possible, but that stores always receive the stock they require to fulfil our customer's needs.
It’s an exciting role because every day brings new situations and challenges that really put my problem solving skills to the test. Today, one of my main objectives is to manage the movement of 7000 pallets of toilet roll - that's 16 packs of 16 rolls per pallet - through the logistics network into our stores! On another day, an unexpected change in the British weather for the better would mean that our customers want to hold barbeques! Therefore, the sausage and burger supply team would need to increase the volume of sausages and burgers being delivered into stores with just a day or two's notice. It's my role within that short time to ensure that our distribution network has the capacity to receive the extra volumes and deliver it out to stores.
I joined ASDA in 2006 on the graduate scheme after completing my degree in business studies. As part of my degree I’d arranged a placement with ASDA in 2005 so I'd already experienced the ASDA culture, which is really people focused, and I was sure that it was the place I wanted to build a career for myself.
I work as part of a great team that works together, and plays together too. We usually go out on a Friday after work and sometimes we get together at the weekend as well. In all the teams I've been in since I started at ASDA, there's been a great team spirit and every body really is happy to help which is all part of what makes working here so enjoyable.
Although I love my current role I’m also looking to the future and my goal is to become an Operations Manager at one of our depots. I’m getting all the coaching and encouragement I’ll need to achieve this. My line manager is a fantastic support and I know they will match my enthusiasm for my development every step of the way.
