General Store Manager, Manchester

I joined ASDA on the Retail Graduate Scheme in 1998 after I worked part time for ASDA when I was at University-  mainly for a bit of extra cash. It's now ten years on and I'm still here and still making a big impact on the business.

I've worked in many different roles since I joined ASDA as a graduate, from department manager in various departments to being a Night Manager in a 24 hour store. The graduate scheme enabled me to gain exposure to lots of different roles and areas of a store in a relatively short amount of time. This quickly helped me to achieve my ambitions to become a General Store Manager (GSM). I understand first-hand the challenges of running a busy department and also what challenges our Night Teams face. This experience has really helped me now that I'm GSM so that I can lead and coach my team across the store to get great results.

I'm now responsible for 400 colleagues and a store that turns over more than £55 million every year. The fast pace and nature of retail means that of course there are challenges to face into and as a leader its up to me to pull my team through. However, that's part of the challenge and I can safely say there's nothing I'd rather be doing!
