Recruitment process

Here you'll see a brief rundown of our recruitment process. We've done our best to keep it as simple as possible but we're a big company and want to be sure your application is seen by the right person. So it’s important you follow our guidelines.

How do I become a shop floor colleague in my local store?

We’re currently trialling our brand new online application system for hourly-paid shopfloor colleagues at six of our stores - Maidstone, Harlow, Hatfield, Bangor (Northern Ireland), Kendal and Dunbar - so if you’re interested in any of these locations you can apply online right now.

Whether you’re looking in one of these locations or not, everyone can find out more about all of our hourly paid roles in Stores or Depots at our new section of this website, where you can meet some colleagues and also have a look round our interactive 3D store model!

We’re aiming to have our online application system up and running nationwide by the Autumn but if you’re interested in applying for roles in any other locations right now please visit your local store and stop by the Customer Service Desk to pick up an application form.

Find out where your nearest store is.

How will my application be handled?

First we score your application. The same rules are applied to every application so it’s a level playing field for everyone. It’s also the best way for you to show us that you meet our basic criteria.

If you do, you'll be invited to a ‘group selection event', which is a lot more enjoyable than it sounds. It's called 'ASDA Magic' and takes about two hours. The aim is to help you to learn more about us and for us to get to know you. You'll also get the opportunity to have a go at the job so you can find out how cold it gets in the freezers and just how hot in the bakery!

How do I apply for store and depot management or any Head Office role?

Step one

Have a look at the specific jobs advertised on our website, as well as details of roles we recruit for on a regular basis.

Look through the specific roles first and apply to the one that best suits your experience. If one doesn't immediately leap out at you, take a look at the types of roles we have and if you see something suitable, apply on a speculative basis. Then we’ll match you up with up and coming opportunities. Remember, things move fast in retail and opportunities are always arising for talented people who fit our culture.

Step two

When you click on apply, you'll be guided through the application process online, which will usually include some verbal, numerical and personality tests, as well as an application form. This is so that we gather all the information we need to understand whether we'd be right for you and whether you'd be right for us.

You'll need to put at least 35 minutes aside to complete the process and it's best to make sure that you’re away from all distractions so you can really give it your best shot. By doing this, you'll help us to get a better feel for how you'll fit in at ASDA.

Step three

If your application indicates that you'll suit our way of working, the next step depends on the role that you have applied for. We may ask you to attend an interview or, in many cases, invite you to a group assessment centre. If you’re invited to an assessment centre, we'll ask you to take part in a number of exercises designed to highlight what your strengths are and where your opportunities lie. We're not looking for the perfect candidate. Just people who are self aware, have the right attitude, can make a difference to our business and who will take their personal development seriously.

Pharmacy and Optical

The application for our Pharmacy and Optical professionals is slightly different. It will take about 25 minutes and you’ll need to upload you CV rather than taking the psychometric tests, so please ensure you have it to hand.

The next stage of your application, if you’re successful, will be an interview with a General Store Manager and a Pharmacy or Optical professional.
