Hints and tips

Or how to give yourself the very best chance of success

They do say that if you fail to plan, you should plan to fail and it’s just as true of a job application as it is of an expedition to the North Pole.

Planning’s not complicated, it just takes a bit of time and the time you invest in it will more than repay you in the long run.

One of the first steps in the process should be to take a look at the hints and tips we’ve put together for you here.

What we look for in a potential ASDA colleague

It’s a competitive world out there with customers always on the lookout for the best prices, value and service whether they’re doing their weekly shop or treating themselves to a brand new plasma screen TV.

This means everyone who works for ASDA should be prepared to work together to be efficient, be quick to react to an ever changing world and strive to inspire everyone around them to achieve the impossible.

It sounds like hard work, and it is. But it can be a lot of fun too - with the right attitude.

If you know that you can do all this, then all you have to do is show us you can do it too. Simple! And here’s how you can give yourself a real head start.

Why ASDA?

Think about the reasons why you want to join ASDA. Maybe you’ve always been an ASDA shopper and it seems like ‘your’ kind of company. Perhaps you’ve had a good look round our website and discovered our values fit with yours. It could just be that you want to work for a company with a long list of awards behind it including winner of The Grocer Magazine’s Best Value Supermarket for the last 11 years, as well as their Best For Service and Best for Availability accolades announced in June 2008.

The more reasons you can give, the more reason we’ll have to believe you’re really serious about working for us.

A little passion goes a long way

Who do you think comes across the best in interviews? The person who is quite interested in the job, or the one who will be fulfilling a lifelong passion by being successful? So think about what kinds of roles you’re really passionate about – and apply for the job which really excites you.

Show and tell

The best way we have of judging whether you’ll be good at the job you’re applying for is by getting examples of how you’ve managed to do things in the past. The more relevant they are to what we’ll be expecting from you at ASDA, the better. So think about how you’ve worked in a fast paced environment in the past and delivered great service that has been above and beyond the call of duty.

Know yourself

Everyone has particular skills and nobody’s perfect. In your interview we’ll be trying to find out where you believe your particular skills and opportunities lie. So come prepared to let us know. It’s also a good idea to be able to tell us how you’re working to develop those opportunities.

Honesty’s always the best policy

It’s also always better for everyone if you are open and honest about yourself and really let your personality shine through. We’ll all get the most from your interview if the true you comes across – and it’s also sure to make you even more memorable to us.

But most of all - enjoy!

Of course interviews are stressful. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t do everything possible to enjoy yours - and your enjoyment is sure to really come across.

Remember, we want you to do well in your interview just as much as you do.

So relax, get ready to impress us and the rest should be plain sailing!
