The Legal team is part of a wider function that includes risk, technical, trading law and claims. It's our job to help the business to trade legally and safely and have the freedom to grow. This presents challenges on a multitude of fronts.

You could be involved in the development and management of crucial commercial contracts such as franchise agreements, supplier agreements, licensing deals, data protection or procurement contracts. Or you might be a specialist in Intellectual Property and Trade Mark issues including copyright, design right, infringement and claims. Then there are the stringent regulations relating to food and a vast range of consumer issues to tackle. At the same time, our continuing growth involves us in a constant process of land acquisition, site development and all the legal issues that go with property and estate management. We employ 170,000 colleagues from a vast range of backgrounds doing thousands of different jobs, so if you're interested in the complex and ever more prominent field of employment law, you won't find a richer or more varied experience anywhere else. We have our own in-house claims team managing all claims internally for the business. And we have specialists who work closely with marketing teams to make sure all our activity in advertising, marketing and promotions - and there is a lot of it - is "legal, decent, honest and truthful".

All this, and we haven't even mentioned Trading Law, which is a whole function and discipline of its own. Trading Law focuses on both the Stores and the Distribution network. With Distribution, for example, Safety & Compliance forms one of the six key principles for measuring the performance of the Distribution network. We use tools such as the Mystery Audit to independently measure each depot's performance around the key compliance measures. Similarly, on the Stores front, we support the business on compliance issues in relation to environmental health, trading standards, fire safety and licensing.
