At Asda we provide you with plenty of opportunities to develop your leadership skills and we are always looking for ways to improve our development programmes. We don’t want to give away too many details about what we have planned for our graduates next year so we thought we would give you a taster of what we did this year...
To develop leadership behaviours and commercial awareness in our graduates we ran a number of business simulations across all schemes. The simulations exposed our graduate colleagues to many areas, including finance, operations, people, customers, sales, marketing and much more! This supported our graduates to gain an understanding of how a big business operates and the commercial impact of decisions.
Working both individually and as part of a team, graduates dealt with challenges and made decisions to have a direct impact on their company's profitability. To make it even more interesting, teams were pitted against each other and ultimate success came to the team who made the most profit during the simulation - things got a little intense!
The development event was supported by senior managers from around the business who provided feedback after observing and coaching the groups throughout the day. Our graduates were then challenged to build their learning from the day into their personal development plan.
This year we set all our final year graduates a sales challenge in our Asda Living stores - we are a retailer after all! Working in teams, our graduates chose a product to promote and sell for one day in their store, with the aim of increasing sales and having a direct impact on the bottom line. The winning team delivered the most profit in their store on the day.
The challenge concluded with a team presentation to the commercial director and his senior management team, who posed some challenging questions. This is the real life apprentice!
Alongside these central development events there are also lots of other opportunities for development such as shadowing leaders from around our business for the day, joining senior management meetings, attending graduate alumni networking events, master classes and much more. There are additional development opportunities for our star performers so if you are driven to succeed, strive for continuous development and if you are an ambassador for our values then who knows how far you could go.
