Regional Availability Manager
Retail Graduate
Hi, I'm Kieran and I'm a Regional Availability Manager in Northern Ireland.
I was already a colleague when I applied for the scheme. I worked at Asda whilst studying for an LLB Law (Hons) at Nottingham Trent University. Since then I've hit the ground running.
After my initial training, I started as a Home & Leisure Manager. I then moved around different roles before becoming a senior manager. A year later I moved into Asda House to work as Project Manager to Andy Bond, our Chief Executive. Then, a year after moving back into retail and running my own store, I became Regional Availability Manager.
I've been fortunate to work with great people who have helped me move up the ladder. That's why I like being able to help other colleagues develop their careers. Managers are encouraged to take risks on people and give them a chance – with the right support you can go very far, very fast. Retail is a fair business. It's open to all, and if you work hard, you deliver and you’ve got the right attitude, you'll get on. How quickly or how far is up to you.
I said I'd like to do a Project Role and a year later I was working for the Chief Executive. I then said I wanted to run my own store and 18 months later I was. After that, I expressed an interest in a regional role and within 18 months, here I am. It's not always easy – but if you prove yourself, you’ll give someone the confidence to take a chance with you.
It's an amazing role. There are lots of plates to keep spinning, but being responsible for such a large business, and so many customers and colleagues is a real buzz and certainly something I'm proud of.
Joining Asda has been fantastic. It's hard to sum up all the best bits. My colleagues are important, the variety of work is fantastic, and the open culture, while being fast paced, is down to earth. Retail isn't easy, it can be physically hard work – but no two days are the same. You're not stuck behind a desk and you can enjoy the freedom to run your own store.
It's a great company to work for – very fast paced and very innovative with a real focus on teamwork. You have to work hard, but it's very rewarding and the opportunities are there if you want them.
