Leaders in the front line

Different types of Depot - ambient, chilled, clothing or general merchandise - offer different challenges for the Warehouse and Transport Operations Managers. For example, in our chilled Depots, all the stock comes into the Depot and goes out to the stores within 24 hours.

Whereas our ambient Depots hold large volumes of stock for longer periods of time, and the challenge is to maintain the right levels of stock to ensure maximum availability to the stores. But whatever type of environment it is, the Operations Managers are the leaders at the heart of things.

On the warehouse side, they make sure stock levels match supply and demand and shift managers are on top of their game. Cost control is an important part of the job, along with analysing performance information with an eye to a continuously improving operation.

On the transport side, the Operations Manager runs the fleet in and out of the Depot, maintaining service to the stores and controlling costs. You're responsible for a 24/7 schedule of deliveries to up to 65 stores, a challenge which takes great organisation and planning skills, strong leadership and the drive to get results.
