Life in Leeds

Leeds is where ASDA first began – and it's still where we have our Head Office, or 'Home Office' as we like to call it.

Leeds has a great deal to offer, as you'll already know if you’re originally from Yorkshire. (If you’re thinking about coming home again you'll also be amazed how much has changed in the last few years!)

Location

Leeds is in a great location, right in the middle of the UK with excellent road and rail connections to the rest of the country. In fact London is only two hours away by train - and there's also Leeds/Bradford airport, about 10 miles outside the city centre which has flights to everywhere from Newquay to New York.

Leeds boasts the biggest financial district outside London and most of the major investment banks, law practices and accountancy firms have offices in the city centre.

The best of both worlds

Leeds is a modern, vibrant city with new bars, clubs and restaurants seeming to open every week to create a real 24 hour city. However, within an hour you can be in a different world in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales or exploring the windswept moors of Bronte country around Haworth.

Further afield

Leeds is perfectly placed to let you explore everywhere from Harrogate with its tearooms and spa to York with the famous Jorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museums. There are also historic buildings like Harewood House, major tourist attractions like the Royal Armouries and the World Heritage Site of Saltaire in nearby Bradford.

Food for thought

If you enjoy a little spice to life, Bradford also has more curry restaurants per square mile than virtually anywhere else in Britain. For a more traditional taste of Yorkshire cuisine head for Guiseley, a few miles outside the city centre, to visit the original Harry Ramsden’s fish and chip restaurant.

Leisure Time

There are plenty of ways to spend your leisure time too with cinemas, art galleries and theatres including the famous West Yorkshire Playhouse. For some really high culture there’s even an opera house, the home of the touring Opera North Company.

Shopping

The Victoria Quarter near to the iconic Harvey Nichols store is a mecca for shoppers and you’ll find designers like Vivienne Westwood, Louis Vuitton and Karen Millen all have boutiques here.

Sport

For sports fans there's football at Leeds United's Elland Road ground as well as rugby league and cricket at the Headingley Carnegie stadium.

A breath of fresh air

Leeds is also one of Britain's greenest cities with over 65% of its area designated Green Belt land. One of the highlights is Roundhay Park close to the city centre which has 700 acres of parkland with woods and lakes right at its heart.

Housing

There's a wide selection of housing ranging from sophisticated canal-side developments to traditional terraces and larger family homes. You'll get much more property for your money than further south, so Leeds is an ideal place to get your foot on the property ladder or buy a larger family home. Many people choose to live a little way outside the city in market towns like Otley and Wetherby, or suburbs like Pudsey, Chapel Allerton and Horsforth. Excellent transport links mean that there are countless places to choose from, all within an hour’s commute from the city centre.

A good quality of life

Add to this a great range of schools including some of the very best in the country, two major universities and less summer rainfall than either Paris or Milan and you start to wonder why everybody doesn't want to live in Leeds!
